CHAPTER SIXTEEN

An uncanny silence fell in the room. It seemed to go on forever as Professor Bruce Clancy sat staring numbly into space.

Is he going to tell us anything at all? Carly wondered. The man looked as though he had fallen into a drunken stupor.

She saw that Lyle was scowling silently at Clancy.

That worried Carly a little. She knew that Lyle himself was a recovering alcoholic, although his drinking days had ended long before Carly knew him. Lyle tended to get impatient with people whose drinking was completely out of control, and she could see that this man was definitely getting on her partner’s nerves.

She decided that she should do something—at least ask a question. Lyle usually took the lead in interviews, but this time she should play that role. She thought that Clancy probably wasn’t going to need a lot of prodding anyhow.

“Tell us all about it,” Carly said to the professor. “Take your time.”

Clancy slowly crossed his arms and looked up at her with bloodshot eyes. Then he finally began talking.

“I go jogging on Saturday mornings. My route takes me over to the Cheswick campus. This morning I saw some police cars and a crowd of people. I asked somebody to tell me what was going on. They said a girl had been killed. Then I heard other people mentioning her name—a name I knew well. Bianca Voigts. I panicked. I turned around and ran back home. I’ve been right here ever since.”

That’s at least one reason why his wife is so worried, Carly realized.

Her husband had come home from jogging, shut himself up, and started drinking.

Lyle shifted uncomfortably in his chair but didn’t say anything. Carly sensed that he, too, thought it best that she keep asking the questions.

Just don’t rush it, she told herself.

She waited for a moment to find out whether Clancy might go right on talking. He didn’t. He just stared into space again.

Finally she asked, “Why did you panic?”

Clancy said nothing.

Then Carly asked, “What was your relationship with Bianca Voigts?”

Clancy groaned aloud and looked at her again.

“Oh, I’m sure you’ve got a pretty good idea of that already, or you wouldn’t be here. In fact, I’ve more or less been expecting you. All you had to do was check the girl’s emails to find out about Rod O’Horn. And it wouldn’t have taken any investigative miracle to figure out that that was me. And you’ve also heard of Lisa Lascivia. Of course, that was Bianca.”

“And when did you use those names?”

With a cough of embarrassment he replied, “On RacyChat.”

Carly had read about the notorious app.

“That’s an online sexting site, isn’t it?” she asked.

“That’s right,” Clancy said. “And of course, you’re going to look into our activity there, if you haven’t done that already. You’ll find all sorts of … well, let’s say steamy messaging that includes some indiscrete photos.”

“Does your wife know about RacyChat?” Carly asked.

Clancy took a large swallow of whiskey.

“No, but I guess she soon will,” he said. “She’s going to have a lot of questions about your visit and whatever else comes out about me in your investigation.
